View Full Version : 996 TT - Tyre wear

Just curious as to what mileage people are getting out of their rear tyres?

My first pair lasted just over 4000 miles

The second ones are going to last longer but only because I've done a "few" motorway miles.

I got loads from the first set (about 20K), but only because most of my miles are on motorways and A-roads, commuting in traffic.
Also, I don't get so much wear in the winter since they don't grip as well in the cold.
Interestingly all 4 wore out at the same time.
I'll get less from the current set, since I'm using them harder.

I did wonder if I should admit to that, or at least massage the figures a bit, since I thought it would make it look like I was driving like an old dear.
Still, the truth is the truth.
For example, drive from my house to Manchester and back is 420 miles with almost no corners and harldy any braking. After getting to cruising speed, sit on a variety of motorways until arrival.
Driving to work is similar, sit on M3 watching the car in front refuse to move over.
Using it all day everyday clocks up the miles, but does not wear it particularly.
But I don't worry about the miles, or how many are driven in what manner. I just drive it as often as possible, some are more enthusiatic than others.

But I thought it might give a view of the top end of what's possible mileage wise for the tyres. Then you'll have a range of info.

No I just drive everywhere at 45mph, same as all the cars in front of me.
It's the national speed limit, don't you know.

What I thought was strange was that the fronts wore out at the same time.

10-12k out of a set of rear Corsas, and includes 4 trackdays, I'll finish them off at Spa.

Have you bolted some blowers on Damian?

;)

I got 8-9k out of mine on the NA car and the fronts wore at a similar rate.

In the Turbo the rears seem to spin quite easilly leaving the odd darkie :D

probably well qualified to comment as I do about 19k miles/year in the TT

mine will do about 5.5 - 6k rears and about twice that on the front before the inside edges go

you can eek-out the rears if you play about with the pressures (my mechanic does this for me I don't even know where they should be) in which case you can get the rears to wear evenly across the width as opposed to just shredding-up the insides.... probably gives another 1000 miles (inc in above figures.

You 'could' (if that way inclined) easily get through a rear set in 1500 miles with heavy right foot.

I've always run Michelin Pilots on my car, but I reckon the Conti's lasted longer on my old 996C2 (I know they would - less power and all) but they just seemed to wear better ? - any throughts form anyone ?

What pressures are you guys running? I've NEVER followed Porsche's guidelines on this as they are far too high. On Corsa/Corsa System I'm running 34/36.

Using Pirelli P zero assimetricos over the last 30k miles. Rears between 6/7k and fronts about 13/14k. Tyres wear out on the inside first. Pressures run at the recommended 44(R) and 36(F).

I am about the same, they work excellent. I find that 8 PSI difference between front and rear is too much, good for safety and understeer (which is why they recommend them!) but not good for neutral/best handling.

Hi Everyone! My first post here although I've around 996 Turbo's for a while...

Damian Could you tell us more about your experience with Corsas such as how they deal with daily driving (stone chips), rain (aquaplaning).

How they perform against normal street tyre and what do advise, Corsa or Corsa system?

Sorry for the long list of questions but I REALLY need to know as I'm thining of ditching my set of PS2's... Very good tyre, eXCELLENT grip (for a street tyre) but sidewalls are too soft for my taste...(P-Zeros were better in this aspect).

By the way I got some tyres for sale:

2-P-Zeros 225/40 18 N3 with 80% of tread left
2-Michelin Pilot Sport 2 235/40 18 N2 with 1600miles on them
1-Michelin Pilot Sport 2 295/30 18 N-rated with 90% of tread left...

Cheers to you all!

Corsas.....well I used both types, the Corsa System and the Track version. I have to say the Corsa System (which are N6 rated) are an excellent all round tyre. Standing water doesn't pose a problem with these. The track Corsa I found excellent in the dry (ok....brilliant) but with a little treadwear and standing water can lead to some aquaplaning

I've had no issues with either of them from a stonechip (or any sharp object) perspective. Nothing getting embedded in the tread (that I'm aware of).

So what would I choose? In the UK I'd go for the 235/295 Corsa N6 during the winter months, and the proper Corsa for the summer. Completely the opposite I did this year!!!!!!

What pressures are you running on the PS2s? On the Corsas I run 34/36psi as an everyday pressure.

Hiya,

I used to run 34/39 on the Pirelli P-Zero but now I use 36-44 on the PS2's as the sidewalls are WAY too soft... They're a much better tyre than the P-Zeros but I which they had the stiff sidewalls these had.

About the 235/295 combo I tried and the 235's increased radius certainly messed with both PSM and ABS operation making them intervene aLOT earlier as the ABs sensors detect a fault slippage as the fronts are spinning slower than the rears... hence the 235's for sale.

On the Pirelli Corsa System, did you use Assimetricos on both axles or Direzionalle on the front and Assimetrico on the rear?

I just checked the Corsa systems availability and there's no 225 on the system...

I could use the Corsa System on the rear and Corsa on the front though... increasing the front end's grip and reducing the rears wear...

Do you consider the Corsa really dangerous on the rain?

Hi Kiko,

No I don't consider the Corsa (non System) dangerous, care needed yes, large puddles - just make sure you are gripping the wheel and avoid steering through them.

On the Corsa System I'm running Front (Asymmetical) Rears (Directional) as recommended by my Pirelli Performance dealer. As you are aware there is no 225 (N6) option for this tyre so I went with the 235 (N6) as fitted on the GT3RS.

I did a check of the rolling radius going from 225 or 235 and there was only a matter of millimetres, however we both know that tyres from manufacturers can differ in rolling radius due to sidewall strength etc All I know is that the 235/295 Corsa N6 and track Corsa worked perfectly well. No problems with the ABS or PSM interferring in the slightest.

I know it's an expensive option to try them and see. It would be interesting to see what others think about this. I know Chris Ward is on Corsas on his X50.

Do you think it would be worth taking the risk of buying the System for the rears (with its increased longevity and water dispersion properties) and the Corsa on the front (225's and its increased grip)?

The front Corsa System disperse the water for the rears, the rears have little dispersal capabilities, they are pretty much like a Corsa track with the exception of two radial grooves.

Personally I wouldn't mix, they are different rubber and have different grip characteristics.

Damian,

Last one I promise!

Whats the expected mileage of the Corsas with a couple of Track Days a year and mostly used on the dry on both town and road?

Yeah right! :D :D

I'm guessing 6-9k miles with your power and setup.

Thanks! Your answers have been extremely helpful! I was thinking between Corsas and Pilot Sport Cups but by your answers I guess the Cups are alot more hardcore than the Corsas and thats much more suited to everyday use I'll be giving them. All I have to do now is find an excuse to dump a perfectly good 1000miles Pilot Sport 2's...

Cheers
