View Full Version : Either a GT2 or 996 Turbo

Can't make up my mind which I want. Would love to have a GT2 for the pure power, but as I have a 3 year old son, it won't be very practical without a back seat, hence why I'm also considering a normal turbo.

Anyway, if anyone knows of a decent example GT2 or 996 turbo, please let me know.

Ayup Steve, good to see you over here :)

Finally grown up from rice burners...what happened, did your Fast & Furious DVD wear out ? :D

Is this Porsche going to be your road car and track car ? I know you like your trackdays, and you like a good drive....a TT might be a bit stale and uninvolving for what you are used too / like for track fun.

That said, if this is going to be primarily a road car, and you want to use it with the wife + 3 year old Son, then the TT is the only real option for you. And a bloody good option at that :)

GT2's are astounding value right now, I've seen some stunners around for not much dough...bearing in mind this was a £120k car, they represent best value for money currently I'd say.

There are LOADS of TT's in the OPC network right now, so you should be able to take your pick and get the exact spec that you want from what is on offer.

I love the TT, its the best car I have ever owned, and the best drive too.

Good luck mate, and I hope to see you getting involved in here more :)

Cheers
Steve

I took an 04 TT out last weekend. To be honest, I wasn't overly impressed with the performance over my CSL. It did feel very sure footed, but the performance of the standard car just didn't make me smile from ear to ear, if you know what I mean. Of course it wouldn't stay standard for long, then I'm sure I'd be happy with it! :)

As for the GT2, I know I would be a lot happier with it performance wise after borrowing Dave's for the weekend last year, but not having a rear seat really does put the kybosh on that one in practicality terms. I will have another car for going to work etc, so that is what makes it possible!

Hence why I'm really not sure what to buy!

As for track days, I don't plan on using my car too much more for them anyway as I intend to start racing very soon, so the TT won't be a problem in that respect.

Basically, it's a case of if the right car comes up (either of them) at the right money, I'll buy it! :D

Steve, have you tried the TT with X50 power upgrade ?

That has more torque and power than a standard one, so might flick your switch a bit more :)

Whats your budget anyway ? I'll have a sniff around for you.

Rosco

Haven't tried one yet!

I would like one with all the toys for obvious reasons, but again, depends what price it is as to spec!

As for budget, I don't want brand new, but would spend in excess of £70k for the right one!

I've seen quite a few decent GT2's for around £70k

And plenty of TT's

If you get a TT make sure you get Sat/Nav, BOSE stereo, Sports Seats (IMHO must have options).

Arctic (silver) trim or Carbon trim interior is nice too, as are the optional SportTechno wheels.

Good luck mate :)

ps. is there any reason why I bought an Evo, then you did, I bought an M3, then you did, I bought a 996TT....now you want one LOL :D

Because you're my hero! As for Fissenden, you owe me big style on that one! ;)

Hate to say it, but it seems a natural progression route from an Evo, when you want performance, reliability and a badge that will impress, especially at my young and tender age! :D

Its great being a superhero...and dont talk to me about Fiss!....he still owes me SERIOUS corporate entertainment after referring you and Tony his way (ESPECIALLY Tony, as I think he did rather well out of that one)...I keep pestering him, but he hasnt put his hand in his pocket once yet, not even for 1 beer!!!

Anyway, back to your Porsche plight....havent you seen anything on the Porsche OPC website that tickles your fancy ?

John was suppsoed to be treating us all to a night out on the town in London!!!

Yes I've seen plenty on the OPC websites, but the prices aren't very attractive. If you see any that you think are fair, let me know, or is it a case of they give excellent p/ex rates? ;)

You'r enot on commission from them as well are you? :D

Lets both start pestering John then, he might do something if we both ramp it up a gear, would Tony come out too ? do you hear from him anymore ? .... he doesnt respond to my emails! :( .....I crossed him in traffic in Ealing a couple of weeks ago, but havent seen him for ages properly

OPC's are VERY negotiable at the moment on 996TT's in my experience Steve, if you see something you like, have a punt at it at a price you want to pay for it.

What are you p/x'ing ?

Tony doesn't seem to want to talk to lesser human beings now he's a "racing driver" :D I haven't spoke to him in ages, last time I did, he annoyed me!

As for John, I've pestered him enough trying to get something sorted out!

I'll have a look on OPC website then!

I was thinking the same thing Rosco.
But if you want like for like, you should be looking for minimum 996TT with x50 pack - I've been looking for these for ages from OPC's but can never find them.

Porsche have a crappy system now where you can't search for x50. Same with the RS, you can't search for GT3RS's

Cem, I was stood next to a mint Seal Grey X50 996TT today at OPC Silverstone, it was up at £79k and is an 08/03 car. It had good spec from what I could see too :) .....go have a look

No satnav!

Well I've looked right the way, but I can't find anything that seems the right spec apart from that one!

Steve, also bear in mind that the OPC website is badly out of date. Some dealerships are spot on at getting new stock on straight away, yet others just dont seen to bother as much.

For instance, I sold my Cayenne Turbo to OPC Wilmslow about 3 weeks ago, and its still not on their website, and yet I know that its not sold either.

Time to get on the blower and start calling around I'm afraid.

Definitely. I think theres a nice sounding GT2 in the OPC network that hasn't turned up on the web. The seller had it advertised on pistonheads (I linked it on the recent GT2 thread which had the yellow car on it), but I mailed him a few weeks back and he was having to trade it in against a 997 to get the money out of it.

If you want a GT2, I'd probably get it from an OPC as they are cheaper than the indies for these cars at the moment, and then bid them in the balls.

Rosco

Dan - don't suppose by any chance you'd know where I can find that link do you?

He told me he was going to do the trade in 4 weeks ago and wouldn't say where as he still wanted to sell to me direct ;) May as well shoot him an email and see what he says though. It looks good in the pictures!

If you want a GT2 you will need patience. Not many around and prices vary from stupid to stupid (in both directions!). When I was choosing I got bored trying to track one down to test drive and just went for an RS in the end as I think its more me.

When you say you've got an RS, do you mean a GT2RS??? Didn't know there was one?

searching for GT3 RS's is easy on the Porsche website..... 911-->GT3-->paint colour white....

Only bastardised GT2's --- Malvern cars have a couple of GT2 RS's (£110k each) but they are mildly modded GT2's with carbon fibre trims in essence and as you say the factory never made such a model.

No a GT3 RS (collected it yesterday!). My last car was a noble and I decided I wanted to go back to normally aspirated. I was considering a GT2 but couldn't organise a test drive and for the type of driving I want to do, I think the RS is the better choice.

As Gastro says the GT2 RS is an aftermarket modified GT2. I think a few people are making them, but Specialised Cars seem to be the main offenders over here. They seem to take a 70k car, bolt on 20k of mods and then ask for 120k for the car.

Blue ;)

I don't have any credibility here either having never met anyone and admitted to having had a metro + probe. At least I didn't fit a flamer.

I'll pm you my mobile number, but don't be surprised if I don't recognise you if you don't call yourself Gastro ;)

p.s. dunno how long I'm going to be there tomorrow. Meant to be meeting up with various people but got a feeling I may get bored quite quickly ;)

The cheapest 996 GT2 I have yet seen is up for sale in the back of Porsche Post this month. It's an 02 car with 17K on the clock. Silver with black leather, 1 owner, comfort spec. It's up for just 60K. These cars will be 50K one day at this rate. I might get one then to park alongside my 993 RS!!!!
