    I've used Senuti — Recover music from your iPod, iPhone or iPad to your Mac before to copy songs from iPod into iTunes. Worked really well. But obviously it's not an official Apple product.

    I used IRip software for about £12
    Worked fine and recovered my library back from the I Phone........Phew!

    Or you can do it online through Cloud service now I believe.
    Depends what storage you require. My library isn't huge, about 20GB so it'll go on a couple of USB Drives but I keep it on an older PC's HDD just in case. All prompted by my laptop having a hissy fit last year and deleting the entire library. (Hence my experience of IRip )
    I Tunes is funny about how many permitted computers it will allow on each account. I think its 5 maximum.
    But restoring back to the host computer from the device requires a suitable software download. I Tunes doesn't allow it to sync that way round.
